The Digital Nomad Guide to Koh Phangan

Koh Phangan has quietly become one of Southeast Asia's best islands for remote work. Here is everything you need to know before booking your flight.

Is the WiFi good enough to work?

This is the first question every remote worker asks, and the answer is yes. Fibre internet has reached most parts of the island. At Kin Haus, we have 500+ Mbps with a mesh network covering every room, plus a backup connection for redundancy. Video calls, large file uploads, and streaming all work without issues.

Many cafes also have usable WiFi (20-50 Mbps), but if your work depends on fast, reliable internet, staying somewhere with dedicated fibre is worth it.

What does it cost to live here?

Koh Phangan is significantly cheaper than Bali, Lisbon, or Bangkok while offering a higher quality of life for people who value nature and quiet. A rough monthly breakdown:

A comfortable monthly budget is around 30,000-60,000 THB ($840-1,680). That includes a private room, eating out most meals, and having a scooter.

Where should I stay?

The island has distinct areas, each with a different feel:

For remote workers, the Thongsala area offers the best balance of convenience, internet reliability, and access to daily essentials.

Do I need a coworking space?

It depends on your work style. Some people prefer the structure of a coworking space, while others are happy working from their accommodation or a cafe. The island has a few coworking options, mostly in Sri Thanu and Thongsala.

If you stay at a place designed for remote workers -- like a co-living villa with fast WiFi -- you may not need a separate coworking space at all. Having a dedicated desk in your room and a pool to take breaks by can be more productive than commuting to a shared office.

What about visas?

Most nationalities get a 30 or 60-day visa exemption on arrival in Thailand (check your country's current allowance). For longer stays:

Immigration rules change frequently. Check the Thai embassy website or local expat groups for the latest information before your trip.

Getting around the island

A scooter is essential. Public transport is limited to songthaews (shared pickup trucks) that run infrequently. Scooter rental is 200-300 THB per day or 3,000-4,500 THB per month. The roads are generally good, though some hill roads can be steep.

If you have never ridden a scooter before, consider practising in a quiet area first. Wear a helmet -- it is the law, and the island's hospital sees too many scooter injuries.

Getting to Koh Phangan

The most common route is to fly into Koh Samui (USM airport), then take a 30-minute ferry. You can also fly to Surat Thani and take a longer ferry (2.5 hours). Ferries from the mainland run multiple times daily.

From Bangkok, the budget option is an overnight train or bus to Surat Thani, then the ferry. The fast option is a direct flight to Koh Samui.
